Ultravox US Tour November 1979

During my research into Ultravox tour of America with John Foxx in Feb/March 1979 (and for the sake of completeness) I have been looking into the band’s second visit to the States a few months later, in November 1979.

I can’t find a record of these anywhere online that corresponds, so I’ll leave it here and add dates as and when. If you can add dates or corrections, do let me know.
Especially with anecdotes or evidenced by adverts, listings, tickets etc

Thanks (especially to Simon Dell)

Note how the poster references the original line-up of the band. By all accounts, many fans were surprised that Ultravox did not announce they had a new singer for this (second) tour and many were expecting to see John Foxx

Some sources suggest that Buzzcocks (not Ultravox) played this venue on this date, supported by the Cramps??

  1. Hi there! One thing I may add is that the first picture is not from 1979 – it’s from 1980 tour of the USA (they played Maryland on 9th November). In late 1979 they sported more “futurist” look akin to Numan’s and Midge didn’t have a moustache yet 🙂

Otherwise thank you very much for your research, I enjoy it!

  2. I was at the November 29 show in Milwaukee, WI. We were expecting John Foxx, of course, and didn’t know who the new guy (Midge) was. I’ve long found it fascinating that so much was going on that year. The John Foxx Ultravox played the first part of the year, Midge Ure was still playing with Thin Lizzy, Visage started up and Currie and Ure were heavily involved in that, and then they reform Ultravox and go out on tour, meanwhile working on Vienna which they start recording in February of ’80. So much happening in such a short time!

    • Hi Gregg

Thanks for reading, and for getting in touch. It was a fascinating time. Ultravox didn’t announce the arrival of Midge Ure until April 80 I think.
Add tot he mix also that during the summer of 1979, Billy played with Tubeway Army for a while AND of course John Foxx himself was in Pathway studio in London recording Metamatic!
